What is a Labuan Bajo Yacht Charter?

A Labuan Bajo yacht charter is the private hire of an entire phinisi sailing yacht or motor super-yacht with full crew, chef and tender, departing Labuan Bajo harbour on a guest-customised route through Komodo National Park, typically running two to ten nights and accommodating four to twelve passengers in en-suite cabins.

Why Labuan Bajo Has Become Indonesia’s Premier Charter Hub

Labuan Bajo is the only harbour in Indonesia that combines four advantages no other base offers in combination: a dragon-bearing UNESCO archipelago within a sixty-minute steaming radius, an international airport receiving direct jets from Bali, Jakarta and Singapore, a deep-water harbour able to host two-hundred-foot motor yachts year-round, and an entrenched shipwright tradition that produces the world’s last working fleet of large traditional sailing schooners. From the moment your aircraft descends over the karst islets and you transfer the four kilometres into the harbour, you are looking at the most concentrated luxury sailing roster in the Indo-Pacific.

What you will not find in the harbour is consistent quality. Three hundred-plus vessels operate from this port, and the range of standards is extreme. The cleanest seventy-metre flagship in the bay sits twenty berths from boats whose hulls have not been hauled in five years. We curate exclusively from the upper twelve per cent of the fleet.

The Three Tiers of Charter Yacht in Labuan Bajo

Our roster of forty-one approved vessels organises into three clear categories. Each serves a distinct guest profile and a distinct budget envelope. The table below summarises the boundaries.

Tier Cabins Pax Length Daily Rate (IDR, all-in) Best For
Boutique Phinisi 3 to 5 6 to 10 28 to 35 m 28,000,000 to 48,000,000 Honeymoon couples; friends groups under ten; first-time charter guests
Luxury Phinisi Flagship 5 to 8 10 to 16 40 to 55 m 65,000,000 to 120,000,000 Multi-generational families; milestone celebrations; clients used to villa-grade interiors
Motor Super-Yacht 4 to 6 8 to 12 30 to 50 m 140,000,000 to 320,000,000 Speed-priority itineraries; Banda or Raja Ampat extensions; clients requiring stabilisers and full air-conditioning

Daily rates are inclusive of fuel, full crew, three meals plus afternoon tea, soft drinks, snorkelling equipment and tender operations. Park entry, ranger fees, dive tank rental and alcohol are quoted separately and typically run between four and seven million rupiah per day for a full party.

Boutique Phinisi: The Honeymoon and Small-Group Sweet Spot

The boutique phinisi tier is where seventy per cent of our couples and groups under eight people charter. These vessels are intimate. The crew of eight to twelve outnumber the guests, the cabins are en-suite with proper showers and air-conditioning, the saloon seats every guest at one round dining table, and the upper deck is the kind of plank-laid teak space where a couple can lie under the boom for a full afternoon without crossing paths with another guest. Sail handling is genuine; the four-cornered Bugis rig is hoisted by hand on most departures and the vessel will run downwind under canvas alone for the longer transfers.

Recommended boats from this tier hold three to five cabins, the master forward with a window facing the bow waters and the remaining cabins amidships or aft. Tender capacity is typically eight to ten, sufficient to take the full party ashore in one transfer.

Luxury Phinisi Flagship: The Family and Celebration Tier

The flagship tier is where the phinisi tradition meets contemporary super-yacht standards. Hull lengths of forty-five to fifty-five metres permit master suites approaching forty square metres, full sky-lounges, jacuzzis on the upper deck, dedicated dive platforms, and crew complements of fourteen to nineteen including a head chef trained at international standard, a dedicated dive master, and a stewardess team running provisions and laundry on a hotel timetable.

Several boats in this tier carry full PADI dive operations with twin compressors, six tank-banks, and rebreather support if requested. Tender stocks include a fast RIB capable of running guests across to Manta Point in eighteen minutes, plus paddleboards, kayaks, sea-bobs, water skis and inflatable docks. The flagship tier is where milestone birthdays, ten-year anniversaries and three-generation family reunions tend to land, and where the all-in five-day cost for a party of twelve usually settles between fifty and seventy thousand US dollars depending on the season.

Motor Super-Yacht: When Speed and Range Matter

For parties whose itinerary extends beyond Komodo proper, the motor super-yacht tier opens routes the phinisi cannot reach in the same time envelope. A twenty-knot motor yacht will steam from Labuan Bajo to Banda Neira in thirty hours; a phinisi will take seventy. The same vessel will deliver guests from Komodo to Raja Ampat in three days where the phinisi requires seven. Stabilisers eliminate roll on overnight passages, full air-conditioning runs throughout, and the deck space is configured around a beach-club aft platform that drops to waterline for swimming, paddle-boarding and tender boarding.

The motor tier carries a meaningful premium and a meaningful step-up in interior finish. Cabins approach junior-suite scale with walk-in wardrobes, marble en-suites and king beds. The trade-off is the loss of the sailing tradition; under power, a motor yacht delivers efficiency, comfort and reach but not the masthead silence and canvas-lit sunsets the phinisi tier provides.

What is Included and What is Not

The daily charter rate covers vessel hire, all crew salaries, full provisioning of three meals per day plus afternoon tea, all soft drinks, mineral water, coffee and tea, basic snorkelling equipment, daily housekeeping, fuel for the main engine and tenders, and standard tender operations within the day’s itinerary. Excluded items typically include Komodo National Park entrance fees (around 250,000 rupiah per person per day), ranger and dragon-tracking fees, dive tank rental and dive instructor fees, alcoholic beverages, premium fishing gear, helicopter or seaplane transfers, on-board spa treatments, and any third-party services such as private musicians, photographers or chefs flown in for special evenings.

For guests who prefer a clean, all-inclusive number, we can convert any quotation to a fully bundled per-night figure that captures park fees, dive packages, premium beverage list and crew gratuities in a single price. Tell us at enquiry which structure you prefer.

The Itinerary Architecture We Recommend

We design every charter around three guiding principles. First, anchor each major site at the optimal tide, not at the most convenient hour. Manta Point in particular requires arrival within thirty minutes of slack tide; an arrival three hours either side of slack delivers strong current, low visibility and few mantas. Second, balance the active days with at least one rest day. A four-night charter that climbs Padar at dawn, then dives Tatawa, walks Komodo Island and snorkels Pink Beach in the same day will exhaust most guests. Spread the highlights and reserve a full sail-and-swim day in Sebayur, Kanawa or Bidadari for a calmer rhythm. Third, dress the dinners. The on-board chef will set up a candle-lit deck table on the foredeck, pipe a Bali playlist over the system and serve a six-course menu paired with chilled white wines. These evenings are what the photographs do not show but what guests remember.

The full day-by-day route, with tide tables and dive briefings, is published at our private Komodo guide and the shorter weekend version at Labuan Bajo 3 Day 2 Night Itinerary.

Pricing Honesty for 2026

The peak season for Labuan Bajo runs from late June through late September, with a secondary peak around the New Year window between Christmas and the second week of January. Daily rates in those windows sit fifteen to twenty-five per cent above shoulder rates. April, May, late October and early November represent the value windows: full visibility, calm seas, half-empty harbour and prices typically eighteen per cent below July figures. The full pricing decomposition with worked examples for couples, families and milestone groups is at Labuan Bajo Yacht Charter Cost 2026.

One commercial note many brokerages avoid: the headline daily rate is rarely the final cost. Add park fees, gratuities (we recommend five to seven per cent for the crew), alcohol, dive packages and any premium tender activities, and the realistic out-the-door figure for a four-night flagship charter for ten guests in July tends to land twelve to eighteen per cent above the brochure number. We disclose every line in the quotation.

How a Charter Day Actually Unfolds

Wake at five-thirty. Coffee and pastries on the upper deck. Tender to Padar Island at six-fifteen so the climb is complete by seven and the photograph is captured in the last hour of golden light. Back aboard by eight-fifteen for a full breakfast as the captain weighs anchor and motors twenty minutes to Pink Beach. Snorkel and beach-walk until eleven. Lunch is served on the foredeck under the boom. The afternoon shifts to a longer transfer to Tatawa for a drift snorkel at three. Sundowners at five-thirty as the vessel moves into the lee of Gili Lawa Darat. Climb the savannah ridge at five-forty-five for the milky-way panorama. Dinner served at seven-thirty under masthead lights. Lights out by ten for those rising for the next dawn climb.

That is one day. A charter is the right number of those days, in the right order, on the right boat, for the right party.

Phinisi or Motor Yacht: Which Suits Your Party?

The choice is rarely about budget alone. A phinisi delivers the full traditional Bugis sailing experience, masthead silence, deck space twice the equivalent motor yacht, and the iconic photograph that defines a Komodo charter. A motor yacht delivers speed, range, modern interior finish and ability to extend beyond Komodo into Banda or Raja Ampat. We unpack the trade-offs in detail at Phinisi vs Motor Yacht for Komodo.
